The boys varsity soccer team got back on track last night with a 3 to 2 win over the boys from Pioneer.Despite the Wildcats controlling the ball and the game for the majority of the first half, Pioneer drew first blood when they finished a loose ball inside Depew's 18. The Wildcats came back strong and team captain Jim Turner put the team on the scoreboard late in the first half by finishing a brilliant direct kick around the defensive wall and past the stunned Pioneer keeper. The second half was all Depew and senior Dan Giumpa showed pure determination when he took on the Pioneer defense alone; flying through a defensive gap and grabbing his second goal of the season. A few minutes later, senior defender Matt Kowalski stunned both teams when he netted his first career goal by cleanly heading a corner kick home from Jim Turner past the frustrated Pioneer Goalie. Well done Matt! The boys face West Seneca West in the first round of the Dan Durrick Kickoff Tournament at Clint Small Stadium in Tonawanda tonight.
