The Depew Varsity Football team has established themselves as one of the greatest teams the school has ever had, by winning the Section VI Championships against East Aurora this past Friday. For anyone who was there the game proved to be a fun filled yet nail biting experience. The team quickly jumped out to a big lead scoring 21 first quarter points. The attack was led by the Wildcats potent running game. Matt Strychalsi, Greg Osika, Brad Barth & Dan Gorski all contributed with solid runs that kept the Blue Devils guessing as to who had the ball. Strychalski broke a number of big runs including a long touchdown run to give the Wildcats the lead. East Aurora fought back in the second half though, cutting the lead to 21-14 in the fourth quarter. The pressure was really put on the Wildcats when the Blue Devil defense held them twice in the fourth quarter setting up a final drive to try and tie the game. East Aurora converted clutch first down after first down using up the entire clock. With 5 seconds left and no timeouts, East Aurora had one last play at the one yard line to try and even up the game. The Wildcat defense however would have something to say about that, as they swarmed the line and sent the Blue Devil quarterback for a loss on an attempted sneak. The entire Wildcat team swarmed the field in victory giving the huge crowd reason for celebration. The team will now play this weekend in Rochester for the Westeren New York Championship.
